Mods Post: How to post to your LJ and to Sick!Wilson

New to LJ? Here's How to Post to Sick!Wilson and your own LJ Page

Hello :)

A couple of people new to LJ have recently asked how to post their stories here, so we thought we'd put up some instructions in the hope that it might encourage people to post.

There are basically two ways to do it:
  1. you can post to your LJ, and simply link to that posting from Sick!Wilson, or
  2. you can post directly to Sick!Wilson
It's entirely a matter of personal preference, but some people like to post to their LJ and then link to it, because that way all their feedback stays in the same place. That's the method I've described below, but if you follow it through you'll easily be able to work out how to post it straight to Sick!Wilson if that's what you'd prefer to do.

NB: the instructions set out below assume that you're using the Rich Text view in the posting box, rather than the HTML view.  RTF can be a complete bugger, though, and cock up your posting... It normally seems to work okay for me, but I've had horrific experiences, and I know others have too. So, do bear in mind that if you prefer to avoid RTF then you can simply work in the HTML view instead. If you prefer to work in the HTML box, though, you probably won't need to be reading these instructions :)

How to upload the story to your LJ

1. Go to your LJ and then click on 'Post to Journal' (which is towards the top left on my page).

2. A box similar to the ordinary posting box here comes up. The difference is that it has formatting icons at the top.

3. Paste (or type) your story into that box. You might want to have a quick scan at the info that other people tend to put at the top of their stories, and include some variant of that (e.g. Title, Author, Summary etc etc).

4. You then need to apply what's called an LJ Cut. That takes the story to its own page on your LJ, rather than showing the whole thing on your 'front' page. If your story is of any length then having it all on the front page will take up too much space.

5. To apply the LJ Cut, highlight the part you want to cut (i.e. the story itself) and then click on the LJ Cut icon at the top of the box. It's the one just to the right of the middle: 3 horizontal lines with a wavy one underneath. You'll be prompted to enter some words. You might like to include the title of your fic, perhaps, or maybe the first line. Or anything you like, basically :)

6. Then go to the bottom of the box and click on "Post to [your name]". That will post the story to its own page on your LJ. Make a note of the URL that appears at the top.

7. If you now go back to the front page of your LJ (i.e. the one with the URL yourname.livejournal.com) you should see the title info etc sitting outside the LJ Cut, and a line underneath that says "Read More" (or whatever words you chose to put into the LJ Cut box). If you go to my page here you'll see how I do it, and how the pages with LJ Cuts look when made.

How to post it to Sick!Wilson

1. Now click on Post to Journal again.

2. Notice that towards the top left of the page there's a drop down box. Right now it says 'Post to [your name]', but if you click on the arrow next to it you'll also find Sick!Wilson in the list. (Hmmm... I'm assuming you've joined Sick!Wilson already. If you haven't then join it first - only takes a moment - and then return to this step.)

3. Select 'Sick!Wilson' from the list and then re-enter the basic story info stuff at the top - Title, Author, Summary etc. A cut/paste from the one you've posted to your own page works fine.

4. Underneath that you then need to make a link to the story you've posted on your own page. This is where you need the URL that you noted down earlier.

5. So, drop down a couple of lines and type the title of your story, or the first line, or whatever introductory words you want to use. Then highlight them and apply that link via the Insert/Edit Link icon at the top of the box (near the left - looks like a globe with a paperclip underneath).

6. Then all you need to do is go to the bottom of the page and click on 'Post to Sick!Wilson. That should be it :)

Hopefully this helps! Bring on the postings :)
