How to Make a Macro - tutorial

*waves*

I'm not dead! I just haven't played with you guys for a long time due to RL duties.. I'm hoping to have more time to join the fun over here in the following days :-)

But I wanted to be useful for once, so when [livejournal.com profile] geekygecko told me that there were requests in the past and lately for some sort of step-by-step guide how to make a macro (you know, the funny picture with text in it?), I decided to make one. And because we really want to broaden your choices to hurt our poor Wilson, here are the promised instructions for you. You can become a macro wizard! Be not afraid, I tried to make it very easy to follow ;)

There's a variety of programmes you can use to do this depending on your Google-fu and maybe even region, but the general idea and the basic steps you will learn here are quite common for all of them. (Examples of programmes: Photoscape, Gimp, or Pixia)

In this tutorial I'm using Photofiltre. It's free and very useful. So you can start here and download it. Follow the installation instructions and then come back.

Done? Perfect.

1. Start the programme. You'll get this screen:

2. Now you need to open the picture which is going to be the base for your new macro:

Choose 'File -> Open'

3. Your picture will appear within the Photofiltre in its own window:

4. Now we are ready to add the text field. Look for a big ' T ' button in the top row of commands. Click it.

5. A new window will appear.

And we are going to play with this one. All the circled areas are the most important for you to adjust the text field to your liking. Choose Font, Size, Color and other attributes. Then click into the 'Text input' field and type what you want the macro to say.

Your text will appear. You can delete, copy, paste, etc. like you are used to in a plain text editor.

Once you are done, you need to confirm with 'OK'.

6. Voila! The new text field appeared in the middle of the picture! You are almost done.

7. It's possible to click and drag the text around with your mouse.

8. Don't forget to save your work! The border around the text field will disappear once it's saved.

Go to 'File -> Save as'

When asked, name the picture and choose the place in your computer where you want to store it.

9. Last nasty box will bother you. It's about the parameters of your new .jpg. Mostly you can ignore it and just click 'OK'

Congratulations! You've just made your first macro! I hope you had fun :-)
