Sick!Wilson Soundtrack

Good morning campers! Let's all gather around the campfire, and talk about which songs remind us of Sick!Wilson. Whether it's allergies, fever, or emotional hurt, Wilson's suffering always gives us (and this summer, House it seems) something to sing about!

Here are two that remind me of Sick!Wilson:

Jewel - The Cold Song

It's getting cold and I'm,
Starting to sneeze
I wipe my nose, on my sleeve
I got the sniffles
I better drink my tea
Oh, do you do you wanna wanna catch a cold with me?

Robert Palmer - Bad Case of Loving You (Doctor, Doctor)

Doctor, doctor, give me the news
I've got a bad case of lovin' you
No pill's gonna cure my ill
I've got a bad case of lovin' you

OK, I'm the official poster-child for "Wilson isn't really dying". But for some reason these two OLD songs popped into my head when I read this post:

Bright Eyes (from the animated film Watership Down)

Bright eyes,
Burning like fire.
Bright eyes,
How can you close and fail?
How can the light that burned so brightly
Suddenly burn so pale?
Bright eyes.

and

Seasons in the Sun

Goodbye my friend,
It's hard to die
When all the birds are singing in the sky.
Now that the spring is in the air,
Pretty girls are everywhere.
Think of me and I'll be there.

Both of those songs still make me cry. Please someone write some fluff ???

These two parts of the the song remind me of several moments in the House universe. It can be looked at as slash relationship or close friendship. I think these moments were hard on both of them. I cut out the chorus and a verse that go between these two verses because they are the ones that best apply to Wilson and House.

1. This part could work at any time after Amber died and Wilson left PPTH
2. This part works from House's POV after he moved out of the loft in season six, although if you ignore the bit about boxes/ new place it works for Wilson too
3. This bit works when Wilson moved into that hotel in season 2.
4. It can also work for any of the times Wilson has left or been left by his girlfriends/ wives.
and 5. It also works for the time at beginning of season eight/ end of season 7 when House and Wilson are apart even though Wilson didn't move. It would work for Cuddy too since she did move but probably wasn't happy about leaving everything/ everyone behind.

"Got a brand new roof above my head
All the empty boxes thrown away
I rearranged the place
A hundred times today
But the ordering of objects
Couldn't hide what's missing

...Got a big black television set
Now I can watch just what I want
But I'm here staring up
At pictures on the wall
And where are you,
You're still stuck inside them all."

And then later in the song is a lyric that could apply to either of them. It would take place after House bailed Wilson out of jail.

"Got a desk I'll write myself a note
Pretending that it came from you
On hotel stationary
From the time we first met"

This is the song "Brighter Discontent" by The Submarines.

From the song "Get You In" by Better than Ezra, this line makes me think of just about every emotionally/ physically difficult situation that House and Wilson have gone through/ the way House goes to Wilson for his problems and sometimes (usually) doesn't or can't help when Wilson has a problem.

"I understand that you are going through a hard time
But what you need to recognize I'm in one too"

Huey Lewis and The News's "I want a new drug" could work for a drug addicted/ depressed Wilson looking for antidepressants. The whole song sort of works since like 90% of the song is about side effects of street and prescription drugs. To save space I'm going to post a link to the lyrics.

Steve Goodman song How Much Tequila (Did I Drink Last Night?) is all about having a hangover but these are the parts that I think would bother Wilson most after a night of binge drinking.

"My mouth is filled with cotton and my brain is sore.
I left last night's dinner on this morning's floor.
My stomach is swollen and my eyeballs shrunk.
I drank so much that my hair got drunk."

yep, it's a funny song.

I could be tongue in cheek and say "Another One Bites the Dust" by Queen;) But seriously, I'm drawing a blank! I wrote a fic once where I prefaced it with the lyrics to "Brokenhearted Me" by Anne Murray that was a sick!Wilson fic:

Broken Hearted Me

Every now and then I cry
Every night you keep stayin' on my mind
All my friends say I'll survive
It just takes time

[Chorus]
But I don't think time is gonna heal this broken heart
No I don't see how it can if it's broken all apart
A million miracles could never stop the pain
Or put all the pieces together again
No I don't think time is gonna heal this broken heart
No I don't see how it can while we are still apart
And when you hear this song
I hope that you will see
That time won't heal a broken-hearted me

Every day is just the same
Playin' games, different lovers, different names
They keep sayin' I'll survive
It just takes time

[Chorus]

Time won't heal a broken-hearted me

Warning: sorry, these are all songs about death. Well, yeah, it's still me.

There's a song I love a lot since my pre-teen years, Canzone per un'amica (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rzN8KjQDVxw), a song by Francesco Guccini, one of my favorite singer-songwriters, about a young woman dying in a traffic accident on a beautiful summer day.

The final verses are imho so appropriate:

"Voglio sapere a che cosa è servito
vivere, amare, soffrire,
spendere tutti i tuoi giorni passati,
se presto hai dovuto partire.

Voglio però ricordarti com'eri,
pensare che ancora vivi,
voglio pensare che ancora mi ascolti,
e che, come allora, sorridi."

"I want to know what it was for,
living, loving, suffering,
all those days of your passing,
if you had to go so soon.

Yet I want to remember you as you were,
think of you as still living,
I want to think that you're still listening to me,
and that you smile, as you used to do."

Guccini was, and afaik still is, fiercely atheist and passionately Communist, of the brand of Communism Italians used to have.
But in front of death there's not, I think, much difference.
Oh, and if there is such a thing as deathfic notion for songs, Guccini would hold the Italian record. He's a poet, but one with a taste for tragedy.

ETA: Also, Ne Me Quitte Pas (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E7zgNye6HTE). Jacques Brel repeats "Don't leave me", gives extravagant, impossible promises, speaks of a long sleeping vulcano that starts burning again - and yet, there's really no hope in his voice, just pain. I can imagine House singing this during dark winter nights, a glass of armagnac on the piano. Because dammit I don't want House to die if Wilson does.

So this one only works for Hilson slash, but it makes me think of them (I guess you could file it under emotional hurt):

Excerpt from Jake Owen's "Alone With You":

Please don’t chain that door
I can’t win this war
Your body’s like a pill I shouldn’t take

Don’t put your lips up to my mouth and tell me you can’t stay
Don’t slip your hand under my shirt and tell me it’s okay
Don’t say it doesn’t matter cause it’s gonna matter to me
I can’t be alone with you...
You’ve got me out on the edge every time you call
And I know it would kill me if I fall
I can’t be alone with you

The Rolling Stone's "19th Nervous Breakdown" always makes me think of how close Wilson is to just loosing it, especially with House as his bestest buddy:

"Well it seems to me that you have seen too much in too few years.
And though you've tried, you just can't hide
Your eyes are edged in tears.

You better stop
Look around
Here it comes, here it comes, here it comes, here it comes
Here comes your nineteenth nervous breakdown..."

It's funny, I was actually thinking about this earlier today (because I had an MP3 credit and was thinking of doing a sick!Wilson slideshow), and I discovered something: thanks to the finale, I literally can't think of anything to fit sick!Wilson except Warren Zevon's amazing "Keep Me In Your Heart"! But that is such a wonderful song, and so--for anyone who knows it solely from the finale--I'm going to post the lyrics to it here, in the hopes it'll inspire someone besides me.

Shadows are falling and I'm running out of breath
Keep me in your heart for awhile

If I leave you it doesn't mean I love you any less
Keep me in your heart for awhile

When you get up in the morning and you see that crazy sun
Keep me in your heart for while

There's a train leaving nightly called when all is said and done
Keep me in your heart for while

Sha-la-la-la-la-la-la-li-li-lo
Keep me in your heart for while

Sha-la-la-la-la-la-la-li-li-lo
Keep me in your heart for while

Sometimes when you're doing simple things around the house
Maybe you'll think of me and smile

You know I'm tied to you like the buttons on your blouse
Keep me in your heart for while

Hold me in your thoughts, take me to your dreams
Touch me as I fall into view
When the winter comes keep the fires lit
And I will be right next to you

Engine driver's headed north to Pleasant Stream
Keep me in your heart for while

These wheels keep turning but they're running out of steam
Keep me in your heart for while

Sha-la-la-la-la-la-la-li-li-lo
Keep me in your heart for while

Sha-la-la-la-la-la-la-li-li-lo
Keep me in your heart for while

Keep me in your heart for while

I know this seems like a cop out because Fox used it over a promo for the House finale, but I always think of House and Wilson riding off into the sunset and having adventures together, all the while knowing the cancer is looming over them when I listen to Drew Holcombe's Live Forever. Especially this part:

Take courage when the road is long
Don't ever forget you're never alone

I want you to live forever
Underneath the sky so blue
I want you to live forever
Underneath the sky so blue

To me, it's House's thoughts put to music.
