The White Elephant Gift Exchange Game (and Prompt Challenge!)

Have you ever received a gift that you couldn't open right away, like a present under the Christmas tree, and you'd shake the box for clues to try to determine what was in it?  Remember how excited you felt when you thought you had it figured out, and just knew it was that adorable outfit you had been wanting for ages?  And remember how disappointed you were when it turned out to be a really hideous looking sweater from Aunt Mildred, and wondered how in the heck you were going to get rid of it?

Well, we've adapted that concept for a bit of holiday cheer.

We're going to get the game started by posting some clues in the first comment thread to describe a gift.  If you're the first person to correctly guess what it is, the gift is yours!  Now you must decide right away whether or not you want to keep it.
  • If you choose to keep your gift/prompt, you can do anything you want with it.  You can use it as inspiration for a drabble, fic, haiku, limerick, filk, manip, wallpaper, banner, icon, macro, fanart, comic strip, fanvid, or whatever your sick!Wilson heart desires.

  • If you opt not to keep it, it's officially considered up for grabs, and anyone can claim it.  One man's trash is another man's treasure, or something like that. ;-)
Once you've made your decision, THEN you start a new comment thread to provide some clues to describe the next present, and so on.

Please try to make your clues as helpful as possible, and make it fairly easy for people to guess the correct answer.  The objective of this game isn't to stump your fellow sick!Wilson fans, but to contribute and exchange lots of cool prompts, and inspire lots of sick!Wilsony goodness this holiday season.  Because as we all know, there's nothing more festive than a sick or hurt Wilson!

If you see an unclaimed gift/prompt that tickles your sick!Wilsony fancy at any point in the game, just post a comment to let us know you want it, and it's all yours.  To make it easier to see which ones haven't been claimed yet, we'll provide a list below the little Grab Bag pic and update it as often as we can.  We Sick!Wilson elves gotta sleep sometime. ;-)

And if you initially declined a gift/prompt, and then have second thoughts, you're welcome to go back and claim it if it's still available.

Submissions can be posted anytime between now and Tuesday, December 31st.

So help yourself to a cup of eggnog and some cookies, and come join the fun!

I guessed right, so I get to give the next gift! Here's my clue: Items used with men's dress shirts to hold the cuffs closed.

Wait, don't tell me. Is it cufflinks?

LJ is being a real Grinch. I am having a very hard time posting since this new release and I know some other people are too.

I like to think that working to open our gifts just makes the thrill that much greater. So pull up a chair, sip some eggnog, and be sure to save your text before you try to post.

Iz fuzzy.

You're apt to see spots before your eyes...

because they hang off a car's rearview mirror.

House's car, to be precise. Because he would totally have a set of fuzzy dice.

Ooh, ooh! Sweaters?

Maybe even matching Horrible Holiday Sweaters??

[identity profile] alternatealto.livejournal.com 2013-12-03 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
It has raisins, nuts, citron, dates and candied cherries. It's as hard as a brick, and people think you're weird if you actually like it!

Fruitcake. Sorry, I posted under the wrong username a minute ago.

A handmade gift, from a loved one (originally mostly coming from female relatives over 65 but in this day and age boys can make them too), brightly colored and scratchy, it's an excellent tool in the fight against cold weather.

The item in this small box makes a thunking sound when you shake it. Might be any style from cheap plastic to engraved sterling, and requires volatile fuel.

These "shoes" may not be fashion forward, but they can be rather sharp! Originally invented to help people travel over snow and ice, this item is now mostly used for recreation and sport.

It's shaped like a cannonball. Typically, it's drilled with three holes. While it may come in many colors, black is the standard.

Wilson already has plenty of these, that he wears knotted around his neck -- but, the giver thinks, not one as eye-catching as this one!

A very popular drink, that can be served dozens (perhaps even hundreds) of different ways. Wilson takes his with nearly a dozen packets of sugar. Because of the overly sweet taste, it is the only thing House never (well almost never) tries to steal from his friend.

I would like to grab the reading glasses prompt as well as "the lighter" one I took. I know it was my offering, but I assume that is okay?

You can wrap this up without using a box at all. And in canon, Wilson did buy one -- a rather old and rare one -- for House one Christmas.
