Howdy Campers!

Yes, it's that time again! You have been busy little bees, and you deserve time to relax and shoot the breeze about our favorite oncologist. Of course if you insist on bringing your laptops and tablets along, that's all right too. You guys have proven yourselves to be multitaskers what with all the drabbles, poems, artwork, and stories you created in the short time that you've been here. Just be careful not to get chocolate, marshmallow, and graham crackers stuck in your keyboards.

Let's kick off the discussion by quoting from someone who knows Wilson intimately, Robert Sean Leonard. Here's what he had to say about his character on [H]ouse in a recent interview:

"Let's say House is three-dimensional, and the characters surrounding him are slightly less so," he tactfully words it. "I'm the friend, the guy who worries about him and gives him advice that he doesn't listen to. It's sort of a television role. It doesn't happen in theatre, these guys. In fact, I don't even think it happens in real life."

...The medical team is a bit of the medical Watson — they're, basically, a sounding board for all of the scenes where Sherlock sits in his room and bounces case-ideas off them. I get the ideas bounced around about his personal life."

*Do you agree with RSL's assessment?
*Is Wilson less than three dimensional on the show?
*Is the constantly worried friend a staple of television or does it happen in real life?
*Does fanfiction help to fill in canon or does it run on a separate track? Is fanfic!Wilson a different breed of animal?

Because my computer is not liking the heat (or it might be the graham cracker crumbs wedged into the cracks of my keyboard), my computer has been acting up. I may not be able to respond throughout the discussion, but don't let that stop you. As always, please feel free to air your opinions and discuss amongst yourselves.

This is a camper badge activity.

I know that there is a separate link on the page for these but I wanted to post this anyways, I apologize if it isn't okay.

I'm in a spectacularly crappy mood and the talk (in another comm) about House seasons 7 and potentially 8 made me even more depressed so I'd love some good Wilson fics to cheer me up.

What are some Wilson fics that always cheer you guys up when you're down? Or am I the only one that actually reads sick!Wilson fics to cheer me up?

After choosing prompts for the current round of [livejournal.com profile] sickwilson_fest, [livejournal.com profile] yarroway and I were “ooh”ing and “ah”ing over our new plot hatchlings, and began chatting about what makes a great sick!Wilson fic. As we talked, it became obvious that this concept was not as easy to define and pin down as we thought. There needs to be more than our favorite oncologist getting sick or having an emotional meltdown. And I know what you’re thinking… it needs hurt/comfort, but that doesn’t always clinch the deal or is necessary. And what about humorous or light sick!fics? Many have earned a place in our hearts.

I began checking through fics in the archive, searching for examples, and came away with two conclusions: There is no set formula, and what I like is subjective and depends upon my current mood.

Since a lot of us are mulling over our prompts and/or happily anticipating a batch of new stories to read, I thought this would be the perfect time to open the topic to our readers and writers, so here's the question:

What makes a sick!Wilson fic work for you?

To get the discussion rolling, you might want to check this post: So... what is it that's so extremely addictive about sick!Wilson fics?. It’s from 2007 when our comm was first formed.

Food for thought: How do you feel about Wilson's suffering? Whether physical or emotional, what qualities should it take on: angst, inner struggle, introspection? Are you craving to learn something new about Wilson or see something about him in a different light? Do you give bonus points when you see how it affects the people around him--especially House?

You are welcome to refer to fics if it helps clarify a perfect sick!fic moment, but in respect to all our wonderful writers, please refrain from recommending, critiquing, or comparing fics.

Howdy Campers!

Well, one more day, and camp comes to an end. *sniff*

I've had a wonderful time. I adored all the wonderful projects the mods and counselors provided, went Lady Gaga over everyone's creations, and had great fun chatting and getting to know people who were only user names before camp began.

Thought we could have a final networking event before you start packing. Here's a last chance for you to reminisce about camp, share a hug, and/or swap addresses ("friend") in order to stay in touch with each other during the year.

You can leave information about yourself on a comment and/or reply to others. As an icebreaker there's a template provided below for you to use. Please feel free to tailor it to your tastes, whatever you're comfortable with.

Mostly just because I was curious, because I find this to be the case in my own writing/art, and also in my enjoyment of others people's, and was wondering what other people thought about it:

Individual episode-related stuff aside, do you find that what you do to Wilson, how you choose to torture him, (or, for those who are more readers/viewers, how you like to see writers/artists torture him) is tied at all to the progression of the show? For example, do you tend towards hurting him/seeing him hurt physically in season 1, but emotionally in season 6? Or, even more specifically, wanting to read/write him with a broken ankle in season 2, but the flu in season 5?

If you do feel that way (at all, about any of it; if you find that the season or the progression of the show affects your preferences)...why? What is it about different times that you think makes you feel that way? How Wilson looks, or his behavior, or what's going on in his life, or what?

Obviously, the examples I've given are just that: examples. I'd love to know what you guys think, the more specific, the better. Because I'm a giant dork like that, and because I subscribe to House's theory that my curiosity is okay, on the grounds that I'm not a feline. *g*

7/10 ETA: Help! I've fallen behind on replying and can't get up!

Sorry campers, RL intruded, and I was out most of the day. As a rule, I'm incoherent after 5pm, so I'm not going to attempt responding this evening. Your great comments deserve more than gibberish. Bear with me, I'll be back tomorrow. You guys are the best! *hugs*
The mod is in.

Hi Campers!

Have you brought your flashlights? We've had wonderful discussions over the last few weeks, but do you have the fortitude to discuss today's topic, ghost stories? You know what I'm talking about... dun dunn dunnn... the deathfic. Is it a guilty pleasure or does it squick you out? Do you have to be in the mood (bookmark them for later)? Why?

Food for thought:
Is a good cry enough for you, or after you finish the story, do you mentally write a different ending, like House coming to Wilson's rescue with a last minute diagnosis and cure.

What about the causes? Illness or Accident? Anyone want to discuss the irony of the oncologist getting cancer?

Going a bit afield: Does your interest or disinterest about characters dying extend to watching movies, (randomly chosen titles: Dead Poets Society, In the Gloaming) and reading novels, or is that a different experience for you?

For writers: can you write and read them? Do you prefer one or the other?

Alright, I've used up my quota of questions marks so let's hear from you. And as always, please talk amongst yourselves, and don’t be shy about asking questions and chatting with your neighbors.

Hi Campers!

Time for another discussion. I'll launch right in, because I have a big sugar craving and need to down a bag of marshmallows. Pardon me if I'm a little quiet at first. As soon as I rouse out of my sugar coma, I'll join in.

Let's compare fanfiction with the show. Sure the show is about House, but Wilson's issues surface from time to time. Angst over three failed marriages, a long lost brother who was finally found, grief over Amber, guilt over Tucker. Then there are the anti-depressants. We can guess why he's taking them, but we never discovered exactly why.

Did canon leave you satisfied or dissatisfied? If you could see more, what would you want to see? Has fanfiction helped fill in these gaps?

Food for thought: Do hurt/comfort stories offer insight or closure on the House-Wilson dynamic that you yearned for, or do you prefer open-ended stories that allow you to freely speculate about how their relationship or situations resolve?

Writers: How does canon affect the way you approach a story? Do you see the loose threads of Wilson's life as writing opportunities?

As always, please talk amongst yourselves, and don’t be shy about asking questions and chatting with your neighbors.

Hi Campers!

Hope everyone had a great week at camp. I can see by all the posts and a comments there were a lot of creative and industrious people. *applauds enthusiastically*

And now you earned a little downtime. Pass around the marshmallows and let’s chat.

Topic:
How did you discover [livejournal.com profile] sick_wilson, and what was your first impression? Did you think… "OMG! I can't believe there's a community for this! I thought I was the only person who would be interested! *squees*, etc." Or was it more like, "You gotta be kidding me. Are these people crazy?" and then got hooked. Or was there another reason?

Additional food for thought: Was there a specific aspect that intrigued you about our community? To name a few: games, summer camp, picspam, icons/manips, or fanfiction. Is there any activity you would like to see?

Please talk amongst yourselves. Don’t be shy about asking your own questions or chatting with your neighbor.

Got any ideas as to what might happen to our favorite oncologist this season?  What you hope will happen, on the show or in fanfic?

Here's an open thread for you to discuss, speculate, analyze, overanalyze, obsess, and squee to your sick!Wilson hearts' content.

You're certainly welcome to post spoilers as part of the discussion.  And if you're a spoiler-phobe, and need a separate thread, please let us know, and we'll set one up.

As always, happy torturing!

This is an awesome community, but I've noticed that there's a shocking lack of Wilson Mpreg here, despite the fact that a Wilson pregnancy could theoretically incorporate a TON of the prompts on the diagnosis list.

So where's all the mpreg? Does no one want to write it? Is it not allowed here because it's not "realistic" enough? This burning question of mine needs resolution!

EDIT: I only wanted to know why a community with such specific Sick!Wilson inclinations is ignoring a potentially angst-wealthy genre. I wasn't asking for personal opinions of mpreg or for writing guidance; it's just an interesting question to ponder. No offense to anyone whose sensibilities are not that way inclined.

So, I've been thinking (which probably isn't a good idea right now, but anyways...) that going off other people's suggestions, we should come up with prompts.  Prompts are fun.  I like the idea of episode based prompts.  That's really cool.

You know what else would be cool?  Maybe we should do something where every month we pick something (word, phrase, disease, quote, general theme etc.) and ask people to write a fic or fic related item on it.  It could even relate month wise (ie January must have something to do with snow).  Since we have so many varied and talented writers, we could revel in their glory all the time, along with regularly posted fics.

Did this make any sense at all?  Or am I having a total insane moment?  It has been known to happen.  *slinks back into silence*

ETA: And I apparently can't spell "discussion".  Is it right now?

I never in my life thought I'd find a community dedicated entirely to sick! Wilson (I thought people like us were few and far between!) I'll try to write stuff, even though I'm not good...at all.

Wilson doesn't have as many opportunities for pain and sickness as House does on the show (House got shot and an infarction!) ...what a shame. We must turn to fandom.

Hi, fellow addicts.

I'm wondering whether it's possible to put a finger on what, exactly, is so attractive about sick!Wilson fics :)
